Biography

j.p.mot Jean-Pierre Abdelrohman Mot Chen Hadj Yakop is a Visual Artist of Khmer origin born in Canada currently working and living between Brooklyn and Montreal as a consulting creative technologist and graphic designer; while keeping a highly nomadic post-studio artistic practice. He is a conceptual and experimental artist with an eclectic and multidisciplinary body of ephemeral work produced in-situ which often incorporate, but is not limited to; found objects, kinetic sculpture, performances, hacking, interactive art, digital media, radio broadcasting, prose and poetry with a distinct affinity for discarded corrugated cardboard and found prints. He obtained a BFA from the University of Quebec in Montreal in Visual and Media Art in 2009 and graduated with an MFA in Visual Art in New Genre from Columbia University in New York in 2015. His work has been shown in Montreal, New York, California, Mexico, Reykjavik, Qatar, Chiang Mai, Beijing and Singapore.

He has been supported by the Quebec art and Letter Council (2011, 2012, 2013, 2021, 2022) and the Canada Art Council (2018, 2021, 2022); He was recipient of the Columbia Morty Frank traveling fellowship (2015), the NARS Foundation fellowship (2018), the New York Foundation for the Art (2020) and the Foundation for Contemporary Art (2020); He has been featured by Maake Magazine, Mayday magazine, ESSE Arts, the Reykjavik Grapevine, the Singapore Strait Times among others. Previously, he was part of a year-long project titled “Leadership Camp” (2019 - 2020) with the Asia Art Archive in America and had been selected for the New York Foundation for the Art (NYFA) mentorship program (2020). He was recently in residence on Governors Island supported by the NARS Foundation Satellite Residency and the Trust for the Governors Island (2020) and was part of Ox-Bow's artist residency for the Conversation in Practice project (2020). His writing has been recently published in the magazine Vie des Arts (issue 264) and the book Best! Letters from asians americans in the arts (2021).

The artist is currently working on a new body of work supported by the Quebec Art and Letter Council and the Canada Art Council which will be presented at the end of 2025 in three solo shows at the NARS Foundation (Brooklyn), Le Labo Media Art Center (Toronto) and Arprim Centre d'Essaie en Art Imprimé (Montreal). He was recently in residency at Ox-Bow (Michigan), Est-Nord-Est (Quebec) and Franconia Sculpture Park (Minnesota), at Sagamie (Alma), Banff Art Center (Alberta), and a forthcoming residency at the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson) and the Swatch Art Peace Hotel (Shanghai).

He is also a part-time lecturer, as an invited instructor teaching seminar classes at Pratt Institute in the department of Graduate Communication Design; such as Visual Language A, Cross-Disciplinary Studio, Technology B and MFA Thesis Production and Exhibition. His fields of predilection includes fine art, visual anthropology, semiotics, physical computing and creative process.
